The History of Fulbeck Kart Club

In the late 1950s, American servicemen introduced kart racing at RAF Fulbeck, sparking interest among locals who began racing home-built machines inside an aircraft hangar. By 1959, this new sport rapidly expanded, transitioning from hangars to the airfield’s runways. Les Shepard organized the first karting club, utilizing the expansive runways initially designed for WWII bombers.

During the 1960s, progress continued at Fulbeck. Brian Pettigrew, manager of Smiths Crisp, creatively solved a disposal issue by using obsolete tins filled with ash to form barriers for a karting course, which was marked out with hay bales. An old bus served as a lap-scoring station and clubhouse. The intersection of two runways was used to create a permanent circuit, attracting enthusiasts from RAF Cranwell and fostering competition. In 1968, the track was resurfaced, and contributions from club members funded the construction of the first real clubhouse.

As the site transitioned to MOD control and became an army training area, new limitations were imposed on the club. The invasion of motorcycles, sports cars, and light aircraft led to controversy, particularly after a motorcyclist’s death and suspicions of contraband smuggling. Police intervention improved site protection, and parts of the runway were converted back to agricultural use. The club supported the erection of the RAF WAR MEMORIAL with proceeds from kart meetings.

In the 1990s, Nirex’s plans for nuclear waste processing in the area threatened the club’s future. Public protests and sabotage efforts halted these plans, and the club’s attempts to purchase the abandoned Nirex buildings were blocked by the MOD, resulting in their demolition. The Lincolnshire Kart Racing Club (LKRC) then loaned £2,000 to help the Trent Valley Kart Club establish itself, ensuring local track facilities. This loan was later repaid with interest.

Despite numerous challenges, the LKRC has thrived, benefiting local businesses and maintaining a balanced environment. From its pioneering days to present success, the Fulbeck kart club continues to celebrate its rich legacy and looks forward to many more years of racing.
